Natural Language Approach
to ESL
In the natural language approach, language is learned from whole to part.  Also, it focuses on the use of meaningful language right from the beginning rather than abstract bits and pieces.  Language is learned naturally as needed.
With the focus on meaning, students need not understand every word to be successful and research indicates that early success is beneficial to the process of second language acquisition.
By taking advantage of an ESL student's natural curiosity, need to be social, and previous experiences and knowledge, a teacher can guide the student in reading and writing far beyond what might have been considered possible.
